Two Kenyan rugby players charged with gang rape

Two rugby players accused of raping an upcoming female musician in Nairobi have been charged with the offence of gang rape.

According to the charge sheet, Lawrence Frank Wanyama and Alex Mahaga Olaba are said to have committed the act at Seefa apartment in Highrise, Nairobi on February 11, 2018.

The two pleaded not guilty before Nairobi Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi and were released on a cash bail of ksh.500,000 each.

The hearing of the case was set for May 16, 2018.

Section 10 of the Sexual Offences Act outlines that a person found guilty of gang rape “is liable upon conviction to imprisonment for a term of not less than fifteen years but which may be enhanced to imprisonment for life.”

In her statement to the police, the woman claimed that on the fateful day, which was her birthday, she attended a party in Kilimani where the two rugby players were present.

She notes that she only knew one of the two rugby players and after a night of merry-making, she went home with them.

It was then, she claims, that they took advantage of her inebriated state and raped her repeatedly, refusing to take no for an answer.

She further says that she went to hospital the next morning, but did not report the incident to the police, not until a test showed she was pregnant.

She says she does not know who among the two sired the child.

In their statements, the players maintain that sexual contact was consensual.

They further accuse the woman of attempting to blackmail them by threatening to publicise the story if she wasn’t paid.
