Two Kitui politicians want rapists castrated

Two parliamentarians from Kitui County want sex offenders to be castrated, saying society is struggling to cope with a spike in cases of rape and pedophilia.

Speaking at Kabati shopping centre, Kitui Women Rep Irene Kasalu and Kitui West Member of Parliament Edith Nyenze said current penalties are too lenient which they said rapists and other offenders take advantage of.

“We in Kitui are ready to push all the way for castration. We want our country to be safe for our children. We have to protect the social family fabric in our society,” said Kasalu.

“Defilement has become a major problem. A week cannot pass without a case being reported, it is not only against children, but also against the disabled, the aged and domesticated animals,” she said, blaming alcoholism and unemployment for the problem.

Nyenze lamented that Kitui is ranked second in the number of reported cases of defilement in the country

She also said rape is rarely taken seriously by the police.

“How can a magistrate in their right senses give out a sentence of two years to someone who has permanently damaged a life of a young girl’’ wondered the Women Rep.
