Two men arrested trying to pay dowry for Form Four girl

Police in Rongo, Homa Bay County on Sunday arrested two men who were seeking to pay dowry for a Form Four student.

Efforts by the suspects to pay a bride price of two cows were thwarted after the supposed bride’s uncle tipped the police.

Speaking to Radio Ramogi, Jared Ochieng Afwani – the uncle of the girl in question – stated that the union between the Nyawita Secondary School student and the unidentified man was being done clandestinely without his knowledge.

Mr Ochieng said he had arrived home from church when he found the dowry payment ceremony ongoing.

He added that the dowry payment for the girl, who is an orphan, seemed to have been going on with the support of his brother who was at home when the ceremony was underway.

Confirming the incident, North Kamagambo location Chief John Agoro said they opted to stop the marriage of the girl as she is still a student who is supposed to sit for her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam this year.

According to the student, she opted to get married to the man due to frustrations from her aunt who she lives with in Homa Bay County.

The girl and the man already have one child from their relationship.
