Two Mercedes GLA200 cars allegedly ‘manufactured’ in Mombasa impounded

Two Mercedes GLA200 vehicles were impounded with police accusing the owners of evading taxes.

A statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) identified the owners as Ms. Cynthia Wanjiru Gitonga and Mr. John Mwangi.

“The vehicles were declared semi trailers hence evaded duty through an organized scheme that claims they were manufactured at a fictitious company in Mombasa,” the DCI said.

One of the Mercedes GLA200 vehicle has the registration number KCR 565W.

A spot check by Citizen Digital established that a second-hand Mercedes GLA200 manufactured between 2014-2015, with engine capacity of 1600cc costs slightly over Ksh.4million locally depending on the mileage, according to cheki.co.ke

A similar vehicle with 16,000km mileage, imported through an agent costs slightly over Ksh.2.3million without tax.

The DCI did not indicate how much money the two owners paid for their vehicles or how much tax they owe the government.
