Two more people killed by floods in Kisumu

Two more people have been killed by floods in Kisumu County bringing the number of people reported dead in the county to four as heavy rains continue to hit various parts of the country.

A 50-year-old man died in Ombaka area of Nyando Sub-county after reportedly being swept by raging floods.

In another incident, a sand excavator in Nyamasaria, Kisumu East, died as he was excavating sand in the river which had swollen to dangerous levels.

The death toll has now risen to four after two women were reported dead in Seme Sub-county.

Last week, the Kenya Meteorological Department issued an alert urging residents to be on the lookout for potential floods.

The Met. department warned members of public to avoid driving through or walking in moving water or open fields and not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows to minimize exposure to lighting strikes.

“The rainfall is expected to continue throughout the month of December with occasional breaks. Flooding and landslides may therefore be triggered by any substantial amount of rainfall in low-lying areas as well as over hilly grounds,” said David Gikungu, a deputy director at the met. department.
