Two Nairobi police officers charged with City Park murder

Two police officers were on Monday arraigned in court over the killing of a woman at City Park in Parklands Area, Nairobi.

Constables William Chirchir from Makadara Police Station and his counterpart Godfrey Kirui from Industrial Area Police Station were arraigned before Judge James Wakiaga and charged with murder.

The two who were found mentally fit to stand trial pleaded not guilty to the offence that occurred on May 20, 2018.

Through their lawyer, the accused urged the court to release them on bail, a plea objected by the prosecutor, Catherine Mwaniki, who asked for more time to hold the suspects as they probe the matter further.

The judge ruled that the accused be detained at Nairobi Remand Prison in Industrial area, and directed the prosecution to file formal application on bail within the next five days.

The accused were given three days to make their responses on the bail issue which will be heard on Monday, June 19.

The officers are accused of firing 15 bullets into a vehicle that Ms Wangui and Bernard Chege were in on May 20.

Ms Wangui, 41, succumbed to gunshot wounds while the partner Mr Chege, 26, was left fighting for his life in hospital.
