Two Nairobi schools risk eviction in multi-billion land row

Two public schools in Nairobi risk being evicted after it emerged they are sitting on private land.

Lands Cabinet Secretary Farida Karoney on Monday told the Senate County Public Accounts and Investment Committee that the allotment letter issued to Ruaraka High School and Drive Primary School 34 years ago was irregular.

It also emerged that the government only laid claim to the controversial land in March this year despite the fact that it has paid for several other parcels of the land.

“I can’t say whether the payments or acquisitions were irregular but due process was not followed by the government, we could have done better,” the CS said.

CS Karoney told the committee there is no documentation of any government institution acquiring the land despite paying monies for several parcels.

The General Service Unit paid Ksh.2.4 billion for 37.5 acres, the Ministry of Transport through the Kenya Urban Roads Authority paid Ksh.800 million for 2.7 acres but they have no tittle deeds.

The matter came to light after the government paid Ksh.1.5 billion as part of payment in acquiring land for the two schools yet the owner is still claiming Ksh.1.7 billion.
