Two patrol cars torched in Makueni County

Two government vehicles were torched on Thursday in Maukeni County and their drivers were roughed up as they attempted to stop unscrupulous sand harvesters.

Makueni’s Environment Conservation Officer, Chrispas Ireri, confirmed the incident, stating that the patrol cars were blocked by more than 50 people. The mob beat the patrol officers and set fire to the two vehicles.

On Friday morning, sand harvesters protested harassment by Makueni County officials. Their demonstrations disrupted traffic on Nairobi-Mombasa highway, causing a snarl up on the busy road.

The drivers have vowed not to move their trucks from the highway until their grievances were addressed by Makueni County Governor Kivutha Kibwana.
