Two people shot dead in Bondo demonstrations

Two people were killed and four others injured after they were shot when members of the public stormed Bondo police station, demanding that they be handed over some suspected child abductors to lynch.

The scuffle ensued after irate members of the public began pelting the police station with stones claiming that the police were protecting child abductors, before they began engaging the police in running battles.

The angry locals stormed the police station after getting information that two elderly women who were in possession of a one-day old baby were arrested and taken to the station.

This prompted four-hour battle between the police and members of the public who continued pelting the police station with stones as the officers lobbed teargas canisters to disperse them.

The situation worsened when the police began using live bullets after they ran out of teargas, killing the two instantly as the other four sustained serious bullet injuries.

Speaking to journalists at Bondo sub-county hospital where they had taken the injured, the members of the public condemned the police action saying they cannot accept to be killed by the police who are the same persons tasked with the responsibility of protecting their lives.

They therefore demanded the overhaul of the entire police leadership in Bondo, and at the same time demanded the reinstatement of the former Assistant Deputy County Commissioner Mr. Samson Akach who was recently transferred to Awendo sub-county.

They observed that there were no cases of abduction or child trafficking in the region during the reign of Mr. Akach because he had placed proper mechanisms of dealing with such issues.

Bondo OCPD Mr Paul Kiarie, who confirmed the incident, stated that indeed reports of child theft and abduction are currently on the rise in the region but maintained that the members of the public had no right to lynch the suspects without fair trial.
