Two police reservists shot dead by colleagues in a case of mistaken identity

Two officers from the National Police Reserve Unit have been shot dead under unclear circumstances at Sangach in East Marakwet, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

Confirming the killings, area police boss, Lemmy Njiru, said the officers, aged 30 and 25, were shot by mistake by their colleagues who suspected them to be part of a cattle rustling racket.

One of the officers was shot in the stomach and died on the spot while the other one sustained gunshot wounds in the chest and died on arrival at the hospital where she had been rushed.

The two police reservists are said to have left their patrol stations without informing the base commanders.

The bodies have since been removed to Iten Hospital.
