Two remandees who escaped from Kayole Police Station rearrested, hunt on for 4 more
Police in Nairobi have rearrested two out of six remandees who escaped from Kayole Police Station in the wee hours of Monday morning.
The two have since been taken to Industrial Area remand prison after they were arraigned at the Makadara Law Courts on Wednesday.
Officers at the station are now grappling with the headache of hunting down the remaining four more detainees who escaped on their watch.
A statement seen by Citizen Digital said that when the men in blue presented themselves for duty at 6.am on Monday, they noticed that all was not well in the cells.
Six hardcore criminals – namely Dennis Ndungu (facing defilement charges), John Irungu (robbery with violence), Tonny Makori, Dennis Maina, Francis Mwangi and John Mwangi (robbery with violence) – awaiting transfer to the Industrial Area prison had escaped.
The remandees are said to have escaped after cutting through the basking shed grill, and making their way to the roof before taking off on foot.
On August 16, 2020, 11 suspects escaped from Bungoma Police Station in similar fashion as they awaited their COVID-19 results.
The 14-day waiting period before remand is now proving to be a loophole remandees are taking advantage of.
