Two arrested over Facebook post claiming CS Matiangi is in ICU battling COVID-19

Police have arrested two suspects believed to have authored a social media post claiming that Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i had contracted COVID-19 and was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The two; Isaac Kibet Yego aged 31 and his 19-year-old brother Emmanuel Kimutai Kosgei were arrested on Saturday by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives at Ngeria area in Uasin Gishu County.

Police sources told Citizen Digital that the two are being interrogated in Eldoret and are expected to be arraigned next week.

According to the DCI, police recovered a laptop and mobile phone linked to publication of the social media post from the suspects.

Dr. Matiang’i on Friday dismissed reports claiming that he has contracted COVID-19 as rumours which he blamed on individuals he described as “mentally deranged” and who are keen on distracting him from his job.

Matiang’i said he had filed a complaint with the National Police Service to establish the source of the rumours.

“I have told the DCI and the Inspector General of Police and they are trying to investigate. We hope that we shall get to the bottom of the situation,” he said in an interview at his Harambee House office on Friday.

The CS pointed out that he has so far undertaken three COVID-19 tests, adding that he would not hesitate to publicly announce his status should he contract the virus.
