Two suspects who died at Wang’uru police station in Kirinyaga may have either suffocated due to overcrowding in the cells or been tortured to death, an autopsy has revealed.

Chief Government Pathologist Dr Johansen Oduol said more samples have been extracted from the two bodies to ascertain what killed the duo.

“Once the results of these analyses are released plus what we have found out after the postmortem then we will be able to determine the actual cause of death,” he said.

John Njeru, 28 and Martin Musyoka, 57, had been arrested on November 27 and taken to the police station.

However, the following Sunday, their relatives were informed that their relatives had developed COVID- 19-related symptoms and been rushed to Kimbimbi Hospital.

Family members recounted how when they rushed to the hospital, they had trouble finding their kin but later discovered the two bodies at the morgue.

The bodies had apparently been classified as ‘unknown African males’ and had injuries.

Njeru has left behind a two-year-old daughter and a widow while Musyoka is survived by two wives and six children.

Njeru’s mother Loise Wawira spoke to journalists on Tuesday and demanded justice for her son.

She said the burden of bringing up her grand-daughter and taking care of her son’s widow would be a tall order since the family does not have any reliable source of income.

Jenifer Njeri, one of Musyoka’s widows, demanded investigation into her husband’s death as she questioned why they had been told he had died of COVID-19.

Reports indicate that the area OCS and his deputy have since been transferred from the station pending investigations.
