Two-thirds gender rules Bill fails over quorum

Two-thirds gender rules Bill fails over quorum

Women suffered a major setback after the Senate failed to pass the two-thirds gender rule after failing to meet the 45-Senator threshold to pass the Bill.

The Bill required at least 45 votes, which is two-thirds of the 67 vote representing the number of Senators.

The Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, which was sponsored by Senator Judith Sijeny, wanted more women be nominated through party lists to aid in complying with the constitutional requirement of achieving gender parity in the National Assembly and the Senate

Last year, the Bill failed to sail through the Second Reading in the Senate after it failed to garner the requisite two-thirds majority.

National Assembly Majority Leader, Aden Duale, had also tabled a similar Bill last year but it failed to garner enough votes twice.
