Uganda Police on High Alert After Reports of Impending Attack
According to Uganda Police Commissioner Kale Kayihura, there have been reports that the Al-Shabaab insurgents are planning to carry out an attack similar to the one witnessed at the Garissa University College in Kenya.
“We have received reports that Al Shabaab militants are planning to carry out an attack similar to the one witnessed at the Garissa University College in Kenya last Thursday,” he said.
“We are on high alert to make sure we thwart such plans and keep Ugandans safe,” he added.
According to Kayihura, the insurgents are planning to attack a learning institution located along a road connecting Eastern part of Jinja and Uganda’s capital Kampala.
GARISSA UNIVERSITY ATTACK
The revelation comes days after members of the Al Shabaab group attacked Garissa University killing 147 students and leaving scores injured.
The operations which lasted close to 15 hours ended with the Kenya’s security agents killing the four suspected Al Shabaab who were reported to have been behind the attack.
It was reported that it took less than half an hour for Recce Squad, a special branch of the General Service Unit (GSU), to kill the attackers and end the siege.
Kenyans have however expressed their frustration at the delay in getting the Ruiru-based Recce Squad to Garissa, arguing that the number of casualties would have been significantly minimised had the response been fast.
Reports indicate that the Recce Squad departed Nairobi for Garissa a few minutes past midday and after being briefed on the situation went ahead to tackle the attackers, killing four of them and ending the siege in less than half an hour.
