Ugandan Gov’t Returns Stolen Cows

The herders had crossed into the neighbouring country in search of pasture when alleged Karamajong raiders struck and drove the livestock away.

The Ugandan government through the Uganda People Defence Forces (UPDF) intercepted the animals and handed them to a Kenyan delegation on Sunday.

Speaking at the function at Katido in Uganda, Captain Ephraim Byaruhanga of UDPF put cattle thieves on notice and stipulated strict penalties for culprits.

The Kenyan delegates, led by the Turkana County executive committee member Christopher Eporon, commended the Ugandan government and welcomed the proposed penalties that include fines of up to two times the price of every stolen animal.

Over 35,000 Kenyan herders from Turkana are in Uganda with their animals through a peace agreement between the two governments.

The pact was signed in 2010 to promote East African pan Africanism and sharing of resources.
