Uganda to use curvaceous women to promote tourism

The Ugandan government on Wednesday launched a competition that seeks to promote the country’s culture and tourism potential to the rest of the world using their most heavily endowed women.

Through the Ministry of Tourism, President Yoweri Museveni’s government officially flagged off a competition dubbed ‘Miss Curvy Uganda’ that seeks to “tell our story.”

Speaking during the launch, Uganda’s State Minister for Tourism, Godfrey Kiwanda, said the competition is aimed at exploring the endowment of Ugandan women and presenting them to the rest of the world to admire.

“If you see the curves of a Munyankole woman… they have a story behind those curves. If you see a Muganda woman concentrating on the waist the way she does, there’s a story about that. And that is the story we sell. That’s the tourism,” said Mr. Kiwanda.

The Minister defended the move saying it was also aimed at promoting beauty in diversity, adding that only relatively slim women have been given platforms to showcase their potential in the country in the past.

“It will be an exceptional event that will see young ladies showcase their beautiful curves and intellect. Some people will probably come out and criticize this, but who told you our beauty is only about the slim girls?” Posed Mr. Kiwanda.

“And I want to say this is not about being immoral, this is about appreciating the way we are. What is wrong with appreciating what we are?”

The event lead organizer, Ann Mungoma, on her part seconded Mr. Kiwanda saying plus-size women are also beautiful and deserve to be celebrated and showcased as well.

“We are going to show you what an endowed Ugandan woman looks like. With no offence, everyone is endowed but we’re talking about the real curvaceous ladies. We are African; we are Ugandan ; and the way we are shaped is truly African,” said Ms. Mungoma.
