Ugandan maid pleads not guilty to two counts of murder

A Ugandan maid accused of brutally killing a mother and her three-month-old baby in Muhoroni has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder.

ON Wednesday, Jackline Auma appeared before Kisumu High Court Judge Fred Ochieng.

She was charged with killing Elizabeth Ochieng Ojwang and baby Benedict Okoth in Shauri Yako estate on June 6. 2018.

Auma underwent a mental assessment and was cleared to answer to the charges.

The plea was however delayed for a while after she claimed that she only spoke and understood Ugandan language contrary to her earlier position that she understood Swahili.

It took the intervention of her advocate Joy Ayieta to convince her to allow the court clerk to read the charge sheet in Swahili.

The prosecution led by Peter Muia opposed a plea for the accused to be released on bond saying she was a flight risk since she fled to Uganda after allegedly committing the offence.

Justice Ochieng denied the Ugandan maid bail on grounds of being a flight risk and set the hearing date as November 6, 2018.
