Uhuru announces breakthrough in Waitiki land saga

President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced that an amicable resolution to the dispute between Evans Kamau, also known as Waitiki, and other claimants to a parcel of land in Likoni, Mombasa has been reached.

In a statement, President Kenyatta said that the government has signed a framework agreement with Waitiki to establish a road map for the adjudication and titling of all the land to current occupants.

“The land has been the subject of numerous litigation processes going back to 1997. Three previous government have considered the matter, without bringing it to a close,” stated President Kenyatta.

“But now at last, we have a framework that promises to bring the matter to an end.”

President Kenyatta further directed the cabinet secretary for lands, housing and urban development to implement the framework agreement and meet with local leaders from next week to work out final details.

The Head of State pointed out that the government is committed to resolving land issues in the country, adding that Jubilee has so far issued more than Sh2 million titles,

The Waitiki land case featured prominently in the accusations leveled against suspended Lands CS Charity Ngilu.

Ngilu was accused of demanding a kickback to the tune of Sh65 million from Waitiki, instructing her ministry to inflate the Waitiki land price by Sh110 million.

The 930-acre land is valued at Sh9.3 billion and is said to have been purchased by the government to resettle squatters.

Ngilu has however denied any wrongdoing regarding the case.
