Uhuru appoints Chebukati as IEBC boss

President Uhuru Kenyatta has appointed lawyer Wafula Wanyonyi Chebukati as the new chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Chebukati, who was nominated by President Uhuru Kenyatta over a fortnight ago has been appointed alongside six commissioners; Ms Consolata Nkatha Bucha Maina, Mr Boya Molu, Dr Roselyn K. Akombe, Ambassador Dr Paul Kurgat, Ms Margaret Wanjala Mwachanya and Professor Abdi Guliye as members of the IEBC vetting and approval by Parliament.

Speaking after making the appointments, President Kenyatta congratulated the new IEBC officials and expressed confidence that they will deliver their mandate to the expectation of Kenyans.

The head of state further urged all Kenyans to accord the new IEBC the support they require to perform their duties.

Earlier in the day, the President met the outgoing IEBC officials at State House, Nairobi and thanked them for their service to the nation.

Chebukati and the six commissioners will take over from the Ahmed Issack Hassan-led team in overseeing the August polls.

During the vetting process, Chebukati and the commissioners pledged to deliver free, fair and credible elections come August.

They now await swearing in by Chief Justice, David Maraga.
