Uhuru asks Kongowea traders not to pay taxes

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday asked Kongowea traders not to pay taxes to the Mombasa County government for shoddy services.

Speaking at Kongowea during a Jubilee rally, the president promised the residents that a probe would be conducted to establish why the market had not been opened despite being fully financed by the national government.

“This market was specifically built for Kongowea residents, so that  they don’t conduct their business in filthy environs when the national government has invested almost Ksh500 million from taxpayers money,” said President Kenyatta.

“I have said do not pay taxes until you get services. Any police officer used to harass citizens to pay taxes will be the one to go home.”

He also promised to deploy the National Youth Service team to clean the market following complaints by traders.

The president was accompanied by his deputy William Ruto, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and Nyali MP Mohammed Ali.
