Uhuru cracks whip on oppositions calls for secession

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday issued a stern warning to the opposition against their secession threats following the October 26th repeat poll and his subsequent swearing in.

Speaking in Kwale County when he opened an induction meeting for governors and deputy governors, the president stressed on the need for all leaders to unify the country through their leadership regardless of party affiliation.

He said talks on secession were unconstitutional matters that bear legal consequences.

“We will and shall not entertain any language or any action that either threatens the territorial integrity of our nation or that threatens life and property,” warned Kenyatta.

“Those who wish to operate outside that order can expect nothing else than to be dealt with firmly.”

This is not the first time the head of state is sounding this warning. During the Jamhuri Day celebrations last week, the president stressed on the need for unity and cohesion.

The opposition has insisted it neither recognises Kenyatta’s presidency nor the legitimacy of his administration.

Kenyatta, however, maintained that he is open to dialogue on matters of building the nation adding that he will not engage in political rhetoric.
