Uhuru delivers Jamhuri Day blow to Sonkos Senate lawyers, Sossion

President Uhuru Kenyatta has said public servants should stop working in private establishments.

Speaking during the 55th Jamhuri Day celebrations on Thursday, the President  averred that State and public officers are not above the law.

“Is it fair for legislators to represent clients in court? You can’t use public office to advance personal gain….Those who take public offices must exit private practice,” he said.

The President’s statements come on the backdrop of the graft case involving Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko in which some of the defense lawyers are Senators.

The advocates include Kipchumba Murkomen (Elgeyo Marakwet Senator), Mutula Kilonzo Jr (Makueni Senator) and Daniel Maanzo (Makueni MP).

On Thursday, the President revealed that he has instructed the Attorney General to fast track the Conflict of Interest Bill that according to him has already gone through public participation.

He said the war against corruption will go on until those who abuse their office for public gain are weeded out.

The President also took a swipe at ODM’s  Nominated MP Wilson Sossion who has been engaged in a protracted court battle over his status as a TSC teacher.

According to President Kenyatta, a country is only as strong as its institutions.

“Individuals will come and go but institutions last. A teacher can’t have one foot in the classroom and another in parliament,” he said.

On November 25 this year, a Nairobi court suspended a gazette notice that deregistered Sossion, who is also the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General.
