Uhuru has 16 days to call first Parliament sitting

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has gazetted the names of 289 newly elected Members of National Assembly and 1,450 Members of the County Assemblies(MCAs) in its gazette notice number 8239, dated August 22, 2017.

However, the list does not include the names of Nominated Members of the National Assembly, the Senate and Kitutu Chache South Member of Parliament, following the sudden demise of a Jubilee candidate only a few days to the General Election.

According to Article 126 (2) of the Constitution, “Whenever a new House is elected, the President, by notice in the Kenya Gazette, shall appoint the place and date for the first sitting of the new House, which shall be not more than thirty days after the election.”

Therefore, President Uhuru Kenyatta is mandated by law to Gazette the recall of the National Assembly and the Senate latest September 8, who will subsequently elect a Speaker and a Deputy Speaker that will swear in MPs, Senators and MCAs.

IEBC is yet to gazette a list of party nominees to the National Assembly and Senates.
