Uhuru in Jordan, seeks support for U.N. council seat

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday held talks with King Abdullah II of Jordan in Saudi Arabia.

During the meeting on the sidelines of the Future Investment Initiative (FII) conference, President Kenyatta sought the King’s support for the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) seat.

A statement from PSCU said Kenya is seeking to win the two-year term on the non-permanent seat with backing from the African Union.

“The African Union has already voted to endorse Kenya for the seat and the Government is hopeful that it will succeed in its bid during elections slated for June next year,” PSCU said.

President Kenyatta and King Abdullah also discussed how to strengthen trade and enforce bilateral agreements between the two countries.

The two leaders are said to have directed their respective ministries to fasttrack the implementation of bilateral trade agreements.’

Other than trade, they also discussed ways to partner and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and fight radicalization.

The FII summit is an international investment conference where 40 countries around the world are represented.

President Kenyatta is one of the keynote speakers and will be talking about how Africa intends to take the lead in trade and investment.

With him on the panel will be Presidents Muhammadu Buhari (Nigeria), Mahamadou Issoufou (Niger) and Denis Sassou-Nguesso (Congo-Brazaville).
