UHURU IT IS! President Kenyatta floors Odinga to win second term

Uhuru Kenyatta has been declared the winner of the Tuesday (August 8) presidential election.

Uhuru was announced the winner by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) after garnering 8,203, 290 votes, a 54.27% representation of all the votes cast, against his closest challenger, Raila Odinga, who received 6,762,224 votes, a 44.74% representation of the votes cast.

Uhuru was contesting for a second term on a Jubilee Party ticket while Raila was running on an opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) ticket.

In an announcement by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Kenyatta clinched a (55.5%) of the vote.

Uhuru, who is the sitting President of the Republic of Kenya, was declared winner together with his running mate William Ruto despite contests by the opposition that the election had been rigged.

NASA, on Thursday (August 10), claimed that President Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party infiltrated the IEBC election results transmission system and changed the numbers to give the incumbent a constant 10 percent lead.

Independent candidate Joseph Nyaga came third with 42,259 (0.28%) Votes and was followed by Alliance for Real Change’s Mohamed Abduba Dida and Thirdway Alliance’s Ekuru Aukot with 38,093 (0.25%) and 27,311 votes (0.18%) votes respectively.

Other Presidential candidates include Independent candidate Japheth Kaluyu Kavinga who got 16,482 (0.11%) votes, Shakhalaga Jirongo of UDP with 11,705 votes (0.09%) and Prof. Michael Wainaina who received 9,257 (0.06%) votes.

To be declared the winner of the presidential race, one has to get 50% plus one vote of the total votes cast and at least 25% of the votes in at least 24 counties. Uhuru received 54.27% of the total votes cast and at least 255 in 35 counties.

Uhuru’s Jubilee Party also enjoys a commanding win in most counties having bagged 26 gubernatorial and 25 senatorial seats.

It has also bagged 145 parliamentary seats in the National Assembly even as IEBC continues to finalise the tally in some areas.
