Uhuru Kisumu visit is a rumour, Governor now says

Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has rubbished reports that President Uhuru Kenyatta will be visiting the county.

A statement from the Governor’s Press Unit termed it as “rumours” and urged members of the public to refrain from spreading unconfirmed reports.

“The preparation of Kisumu County Universal Health Coverage registration activation has been surrounded by continuous rumours circulating in the media to the effect that HE President Uhuru Kenyatta would be gracing the occasion.

“The Office of the Governor has neither been informed nor made aware of any such developments and requests that such rumours should desist forthwith,” the statement reads.

The last time President Kenyatta visited Kisumu was in April 2017 just before the general elections.

Last month, a section of the media reported that President Kenyatta would visit Kisumu County again this year but this time to launch the universal health coverage program.

The launch, they said, would in line with his Big Four Agenda that prioritizes provision of food security, healthcare, affordable housing and manufacturing.

Political pundits had begun linking the “planned” Uhuru Kisumu visit to the handshake between the Head of State and Opposition leader Raila Odinga in March.

The political landscape has seemingly shifted the past couple of months even as Odinga maintains that he has not betrayed supporters of the National Super Alliance by agreeing to a peace deal.

Last month, reports emerged of an alleged secret meeting between the two leaders, a month after the President reconciled with Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho.
