Uhuru meets Nairobi MCAs, Sonkos impeachment motion dropped

On Saturday, President Uhuru Kenyatta met Nairobi Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) from all parties at State House, Nairobi.

Out of the 122 Nairobi MCAs, 115 were in attendance in a meeting that focused majorly on the new Nairobi county takeover by the national government.

At the meeting, President Uhuru said he would be joined by ODM leader Raila Odinga in sensitizing Nairobi residents about the takeover.

Citizen Digital understands that Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was present, flanked by County Beatrice Elachi (Assembly Speaker), Nairobi Senator Joshnson Sakaja, Eugene Wamalwa (The Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Devolution) and Kenneth Lusaka (Speaker of the Senate)

At the same event, the president asked the MCA’s to drop the impeachment motion against Governor Sonko.

The county’s communications director, Elkana Jacob, said the MCAs agreed to drop the motion and focus on service delivery as advised.

Conspicuously missing from the sitting, however, was Makongeni MCA Peter Imwatok, the mover of the motion.

Our news desk understands that Imwatok who was in Kisumu has vowed to go on with the motion saying will neither be intimidated nor dettered.

The motion, the sitting however decided, would be shot down when raised on Tuesday when the assembly will be retreating for their sitting.

The Makongeni MCA who is also the Nairobi County Assembly Minority Whip, on Thursday last week tabled the motion citing claims of abuse of office, violation of the Constitution, irregular procurement of tenders among others.

According to Imwatok, the county has seen irregular withdrawal of Ksh.200 million in cash as well as misuse of public resources by the governor to settle political scores.

“Sonko every time consumes alcohol in the office of the governor, thus making insults to employees and members of this House,” said Imwatok.

“He fires staff on WhatsApp and Facebook without allowing them due process thus affecting service delivery.”
