Uhuru Park closed ahead of NASA swearing-in

The Nairobi County Government has announced the closure of Uhuru Park Grounds until further notice, raising suspicion it is a move to lock out the National Super Alliance.

The opposition had announced that it will swear in its principal Raila Odinga as the People’s president on January 30 at Uhuru Park.

In a public notice, however, City Hall has said Uhuru Park will remain closed from Wednesday, January 23, until further notice to allow for “phased improvement”.

“Notice is hereby given to the General Public that Uhuru Park Grounds is scheduled to undergo phased improvement works in order to enhance recreational usefulness to its visitors. We apologise for any inconveniences caused,” read the notice issued by County Secretary Leboo Ole Morintat.

During the closure, Uhuru Park will remain out of bound to the public for any gatherings or meetings.

A Church and a group called the Nairobi Business Community had reportedly written to City Hall seeking a permit to use Uhuru Park on January 30th when the NASA event is set to take place.

The business community, which claimed to have been allowed to use the venue, had announced it was planning to hold a free medical clinic targeting street children who would wish to get circumcised.
