Uhuru, Raila make unexpected visit to Kisumu port

President Uhuru Kenyatta made an unannounced private tour of the refurbished Kisumu port project on Sunday afternoon.

The plane carrying President Kenyatta landed at the port alongside three military choppers.

Traffic police who had been put on standby at the airport roundabout later left after it became clear that he was not going to access the port via road.

Journalists were barred from entering the port.

Reports indicate that he was later joined by ODM leader Raila Odinga.

The President and his entourage could be seen from a distance entering the MV Uhuru ship.

The tour lasted close to an hour before the President was flown to the Kisumu International Airport.

After he disembarked from the chopper, he walked to the airport VIP lounge, waving to curious onlookers who tried to catch a glimpse of him from the airport fence.

He then flew back to Nairobi aboard a military jet.

Last week, Interior PS Karanja Kibicho toured the port and confirmed that the refurbishment was complete.

According to him, the COVID-19 pandemic slowed down preparations for the official launch of the port.
