Uhuru-Raila pact: What NASA co-principals decided during summit

National Super Alliance co-principals were on Monday locked up in a tense four-hour crisis meeting amid an impasse occasioned by the unity pact between President Uhuru Kenyata and opposition chief Raila Odinga.

The high-stakes meeting at the Stoni Athi Resort in Athi River brought together members of the NASA summit who include; ODM Party leader Raila Odinga, Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka, Moses Wetangula of FORD-Kenya and Musalia Mudavadi of Amani National Congress.

In a statement read by Mr. Mudavadi, they revealed Mr. Odinga briefed them on the details of his meeting with President Kenyatta and resolved to have their respective parties ratify the decision to work with the government on unity.

“The summit was briefed extensively by Raila Odinga on the details of the meeting that took place between him and Uhuru Kenyatta. The summit registers its appreciation on the opening of doors for constructive dialogue and consequent steps to be taken to address issues of national concern,”said Mr. Mudavadi.

“Following this frank and candid discussion, members of the summit will proceed to brief the organs of the constituent political parties to bring them up to speed.”

Describing the issues at hand as weighty, the NASA leaders declined to take any questions from the media on their discussions.

The statement was an attempt by the coalition to portray a picture of unity after the shock meeting Mr. Odinga held with the president on Friday.

There were also rumours that Mr. Odinga would snub the Athi River meeting.

While the NASA leaders arrived for the meeting flanked by their close confidantes, only Siaya Senator James Orengo (ODM), former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama (Wiper) and Ford Kenya Secretary General Eseli Simiyu were allowed in the boardroom.

The rest, among them Amani National Congress Secretary General Barrack Muluka and former Senator Bonny Khalwale were edged out.
