Uhuru renews call for national unity, cohesion ahead of polls

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday, October 20, led the country in commemorating the Seventh Mashujaa Day at the Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos County.

The President used the occasion to speak passionately about national unity, cohesion and prosperity.

He urged Kenyans to be wary of politicians who will embark on using “ugly rhetoric” to rally voters as we head into electioneering period.

The President insisted on the need to strengthen devolution and building firm institutions, with a national face.

“My generation of leaders must realise the promise of this new Constitution. We must entrench devolution; we must restore the unity our fathers attained,” said the Head of State.

He mentioned political parties as very important institutions that can be harnessed to foster national unity.

He, however, noted that unity of Kenyans cannot be complete while leaders continue to use hateful language.

He challenged the current leadership to be mindful of their actions, which will be used to judge them in the future.

The Head of State urged the media and other civil institutions to remain diligent as they carry out their duties, so as to guide this country successfully into the fourth coming electioneering period.

President Kenyatta also challenged the institutions to be patriotic enough to show the world that Kenyans can disagree politically, and yet remain a strong united nation.

He called on Kenyans to aspire to be better citizens who are mindful of the interests of the whole nation.

He urged them to adopt the spirit of the founding fathers of the country who he noted disagreed on some issues but remained committed to the oneness of Kenya.

It was the second time that President Kenyatta led the country into celebrating a national day away from the capital city, Nairobi.
