Uhuru revives Migingo Island debate, promises to bring it back

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday, July 12 promised the people of Homa Bay County and Nyanza Region at large that his government is in the process of resolving the dispute surrounding Migingo Island.

Migingo is a 2,000-square-meter island in Lake Victoria which is fish-rich and has been the center of a territorial dispute between Kenya and Uganda with each state claiming the land is hers.

President Kenyatta, who was speaking during a rally in Mbita, now says that the Jubilee administration has not neglected the issue and that a group of expertise and surveys from the two countries are currently in the process of re-mapping Migingo’s boundaries, to the delight of locals.

“You and I know that Migingo is ours, in Kenya. As we are speaking this moment, there are groups of expertise who are mapping the boundaries to set the record straight. In due course, Migingo will be ours and you will start activities of fishing in the area again,” said President Kenyatta.

The President, who is in Homa Bay County, one of the strongholds of the opposition National Super Alliance (NASA), called upon the residents to vote for him as the Jubilee administration has proven that it serves the interests of Nyanza region, contrary to claims made by the NASA leaders.

The President promised more goodies including reviving the cotton industry in Kisumu if he will retain his seat in the coming August polls.
