Uhuru, Ruto to attend Solai dam victims memorial

President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto will attend the memorial service of victims of the Solai dam tragedy on Wednesday.

The event, that will be held in Nakuru is in honor of the 47 people who were killed after the dam burst its banks and washed away homes.

Over 5,000 people were left displaced after the horrific incident last week with State House terming it as saddening.

On his part, DP Ruto told a meeting with senior officials from the Water and Agriculture ministries that constructors must follow the law when constructing water reservoirs.

The owner of the dam, Mansukh Patel, has since issued an apology through a paid advertisement in local dailies.

“On Wednesday, May 9th, we lost 47 precious lives to the Solai dam tragedy. We, the Patel family of Solai and members of the Patel farm management would like to express our deepest condolences,” his statement reads.

The Kenya Defence Forces begun emptying other dams in the area that pose a risk to those living nearby. The exercise is expected to take 60 days.
