Uhuru signs to law Bill cushioning MPs from losing seats

President Uhuru Kenyatta has signed a Bill paving way to the dissolution of Jubilee coalition and formation of the Jubilee Party, thereby cautioning members of the respective affiliate parties from losing their seats.

The Political Parties Amendment Act 2016 gives Jubilee affiliate parties TNA, URP and APK, among others, provision to form the Jubilee Party that has been touted as the probable party for President Kenyatta in his 2017 re-election bid.

The push for the formation of Jubilee Party, which began last year, had been hindered by the absence of legislative freewill that could assure the coalition members the safety of their seats if they merged.

URP party members have also expressed reluctance in joining the Jubilee Party for apparent fear of losing their identity.

This has caused some political leaders in the Rift Valley including Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto, Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter and Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi to shift allegiance from DP William Ruto’s political wing.

The trio was seen campaigning for Kanu candidate Paul Sang during the Kericho Senatorial by-election which pitted him against Jubilee’s Aaron Cheruiyot. Cheruiyot was announced winner in results that were widely contested by Governor Ruto’s camp.
