Uhuru to sack CSs, County bosses who botch ambitious Nairobi project

President Uhuru Kenyatta has vowed to sack senior government officials if they fail a new and ambitious Nairobi regeneration project.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko also promised to sack his senior officials if they do not succeed in the joint government and Nairobi county project.

During a meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta, the CSs and Nairobi County Executives committed to ambitious timelines for the delivery of key services, ranging from garbage collection to launching a mortgage refinance company.

The team, comprising of national and county leaders and co-chaired by Governor Mike Sonko and Tourism CS Najib Balala committed to have all garbage cleared from all 85 electoral wards in Nairobi within 30 days alongside a clean-up of Nairobi river.

The leaders further assured the president that the automation of bus terminal, launch of the Thika Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) and set up of the Nairobi traffic management committee to deal with lengthy traffic jams would also happen within a month.

While revealing he had made an incognito albeit unpleasant visit to the Kenyatta National Hospital, Mr Kenyatta told the team to focus on accident and emergency centres.

The team promised to equip high-volume health centres as well as improve trauma services at Mbagathi and Mama Lucy hospitals to ease pressure on KNH within three months.

Chief of Staff Nzioka Waita, who is to oversee the project on behalf of the President, also committed to provide 200,000 new affordable homes.

The team is also expected to launch the Kenya Mortgage Refinance Company and sign agreements with financial institutions to fund 100,000 housing units in three months.

Car-free days in Nairobi and youth market days in 17 sub counties will also be set up.
