Uhuru to sign Garissa University College charter on Thursday

President Uhuru Kenyatta will on Thursday October 19 sign a charter granting Garissa University College status as a fully-fledged University

Speaking at a Jubilee rally in Garissa County, President Kenyatta said that he had earlier planned to issue the charter to the university college in person but because of the election campaigns committments, he will sign it in Nairobi.

“I ought to have signed the charter by now. The only reason I have not done that is because of the prolonged political period but on Thursday I will sign it and the University will get its chancellor,” said President Kenyatta.

According to the Commission for University Education (CUE) website only 38 universities have been chartered.

This comes as boost for the college which was attacked by Al-Shabaab militants on April 2, 2015 who killed 147 students in what has been described as the worst terrorist attack in Kenya.

However, the university college was re-opened on September 14 last year.
