Uhuru to win August poll in round one Electoral Observation body survey

With only 60 days to the much awaited August 8, 2017 General Election, the leading political factions; the ruling Jubilee Party and the opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) have intensified their hunts for votes.

President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party has camped in Kisii, Nyamira and Uasin Gishu Counties while NASA, under the leadership of Raila Odinga, heads to Coast and Ukambani regions for a major offensive.

The two groups are mobilising their supporters to turn up in their numbers and vote for them in the August polls, an election pundits term as one of the most competitive in Kenya’s history.

A recent survey by an electoral observation group, African Electoral Observation Group, shows that at least 89% of the registered voters will cast their ballot on August 8. This means that 16 million voters of the 19.2 million registered voters will cast their ballot.

The survey further shows that President Uhuru Kenyatta will emerge victorious in the first round with a 51.7% approval rating against Mr Odinga’s 39% approval rating.

In 2013, President Kenyatta beat Mr Odinga by over 800,000 votes after garnering 6,173,433 votes (50.51%) against Mr Odinga’s 5,340,546 (43.7%).

In 2013, 12.3 million registered voters – an equivalent of 86% – cast their ballot.

The African Electoral Observation Group survey further shows that areas perceived as Jubilee strongholds will record higher voter turnout compared to areas perceived as Opposition, NASA, strongholds.

It also shows that the number of undecided voters in Western Kenya and Coast regions is the highest.

The survey also shows that the level of pre and post-election violence diminishes at the national level and grows at the county level.
