‘Uhuru will stop 16% V.A.T on fuel,’ Raila assures Kenyans

Opposition leader Raila Odinga has called for patience over the 16 percent Value Added Tax (V.A.T) on fuel as recently announced by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).

This comes following public uproar at the new fuel prices announced by the energy regulator on Saturday following a directive issued by Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich.

Speaking in Kisumu on Sunday evening, the National Super Alliance (NASA) chief said he was optimistic President Uhuru Kenyatta would halt the move once he assents to the amendments by the National Assembly on the Finance Bill 2018.

“The issue of increasing fuel prices cannot continue, it has to stop,” said Mr. Odinga.

“Members of Parliament already made amendments to the (Finance) Bill and removed the 16% V.A.T, (President) Uhuru will intervene very soon, just wait and see.”

The former premier further assured President Uhuru Kenyatta of his, as well as the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party’s support in the ongoing fight against corruption.

Mr. Odinga was flanked by Siaya Senator James Orengo and Kisumu Woman Representatice Roza Buyu.
