Uhurus message to the UK after killer Manchester blast

President Uhuru Kenyatta has sent his condolences to the families that were affected by a suspected terrorist attack in Manchester, United Kingdom Tuesday morning.

The tragic blast – which was carried out by a lone suspect outside US singer Ariana Grande concert – has claimed 22 lives so far, including children.

In a circular sent to newsrooms just hours after the attack, Uhuru said that Kenyans stand with United Kingdom during this trying time.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the United Kingdom after the tragic incident in Manchester last night. Kenya knows what it is like to suffer a tragedy such as this, so our hearts go out to the U.K., and especially to the families which have woken to devastating news this morning,” read he statement.

Kenya has herself borne the brunt of terrorism – with the most tragic attacks in recent times being the Westgate Attack where 67 lives were lost and the Garissa University attack where 148 people were killed.

Noting that the UK and Kenya have been longtime partners, Uhuru stated that the government was willing to offer any support it can.

“I have assured the Prime Minister, Rt Hon Theresa May, that she will have any help we can give; and that we will stand with her and with her country in the fight against extremism,” he concluded.

This is the second major attack to hit the UK in recent times.

On March 22 this year, six people were killed and over 50 others were injured when a 52-year-old Briton drove a car into pedestrians near Westminister Palace.

Khalid Masood – who was linked to extremist Islamist groups – reportedly sent a message saying that he was waging war on the UK’s military action in the Middle East.
