Ukambani Politics: Mutuas Maendeleo Chap Chap

Ukambani politics seems to be taking a new shape after Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua launched a political movement meant to unite the region on Friday.

His Maendeleo Chap Chap movement has elicited mixed reaction from Ukambani leaders who deem it as a bid to dethrone area political kingpin, Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

According to Mutua, the Maendeleo Chap Chap movement will unite residents of Machakos and the entire Ukambani region at large to focus on development.

Despite a section of leaders openly expressing their backing for the movement, a section of area leaders have expressed opposition to the Maendeleo Chap Chap movement.

Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior says all leaders from Ukambani should have been involved in the initiative for any meaningful progress to be achieved, given each county has its own unique challenges.

Kilonzo Junior also dismissed the meeting, saying it is too early for the region to come up with another political leader to overtake Kalonzo Musyoka, who is also the opposition cord co-principal.

Yatta MP Francis Mwangangi also hit out at Mutua saying his attempt to take over ukambani leadership is not well thought out as Kalonzo is still able.

Makueni Governor Kibutha Kibwana also voiced his discomfort with the new movement, terming it immature.

The sentiments come just a day after the launch of the initiative that the Machakos governor says will tackle numerous challenges facing Ukambani people.
