UNEP lauds move to ban plastic bags

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has lauded Kenya’s move to ban plastic bags starting end of this month.

Speaking in Nairobi, the Head of UN Environment Programme, Erik Solheim, emphasized on the need to implement sustainable development goals part of which is to protect and conserve the environment.

Solheim called on Kenya’s private sector to collaborate with other global organizations in achieving such goals.

The UN environment head spoke during an MOU signing ceremony with mobile telephony service provider, Safaricom, towards conservation of the environment.

Safaricom CEO, Bob Collymore, also welcomed the government’s move indicating his firm’s commitment to comply with the new law.

The government will from the 28th of this month effect a ban on the manufacture, supply and use of plastic bags throughout the country.

This is after the Environment and Natural Resources CS, Prof. Judy Wakhungu, banned the use, manufacture and importation of all plastic bags used for commercial and household packaging on the gazette notice that dated February 28.
