UNESCO to create geoparks in Baringo

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has come up with an initiative to earmark several physical features in Baringo County  as a unifying factor to curb the problem of insecurity that has plagued Baringo County for a long time as a result of banditry, cattle raids and warring communities.

These geoparks will become tourist attraction sites that will not only foster peace among the members of the county but also allow them to earn revenue.

Speaking during the World Peace Day at Kapsois Primary School, Kenya National Commission for UNESCO in the County, Dr. Rashid Abdi Aman said that the process of creating Geoparks in the county is ongoing and it also incorporates other five counties in the North Rift region.

“We want to introduce in Africa for the first time the concept of global geoparks. We want to be the first global geoparks south of the Sahara. We feel that the Baringo ecosystem qualifies because it has all the features that are necessary to be enlisted as a UNESCO global Geopark.” Said Aman.

He also added that the initiative will bring the people of Baringo County together and eliminate conflicts in the region.

Such an initiative has brought peace among the Pokot and Ilchamus communities living on the borders of Lake Baringo after the creation of Ruko Conservancy in the region.
