US accuses Raila of undermining Kenyas Constitution

The United States Government has criticized the ‘swearing- in’ of NASA leader Raila Odinga, terming it unconstitutional.

In a statement to newsrooms, State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert said that President Uhuru Kenyatta was validly re-elected in the October 26 repeat presidential poll.

The Trump administration further commended security forces for the restraint shown during the ‘oathing’ of the opposition leader, urging Kenyans to resolve grievances through appropriate legal mechanisms.

However, the United States government expressed concern over the move to shutdown TV stations, urging the government’s to respect freedom of expression and implement court orders calling for the restoration of television broadcasts.

“We are deeply concerned by the Government’s action to shutdown, intimidate and restrict the media. Freedom of expression, including for members of the media, is essential to democracy and is enshrined in Kenya’s Constitution,” said Heather.

Stressing on the need to have dialogue, the US also called on the government to build cohesion and address longstanding issues.

“It is only Kenyans who can find a way to resolve their differences and chart the destiny of the great country,” said the department spokesperson.
