University dons announce countrywide strike

Lecturers in public universities’ on Thursday announced a countrywide strike demanding the government to table a counter-offer of the 2017-2021 salary proposal.

Top on the list of their demands, the dons want their pay structure and awarding of allowances streamlined akin to their colleagues in the public sector.

“We have launched a nationwide strike to ensure our CBA is implemented… universities don’t have salary structures. Some junior university officers earn more than their seniors,” said Muga K’ Olale, chairman UASU.

The announcement came even as the new Labour CS Ukur Yattani urged the dons to shelve their industrial action and return to talks.

Speaking to the media at Kenyatta National Hospital, leaders from UASU, KUSU, KUDHEIHA and KMPDU unions further claimed that it is the fifth time the Ministry of Education has failed to honor its promise to address their grievances.

“Medical lectures have been left out for long, we are therefore issuing a strong warning to parents with students in health colleges that there will be no lectures,” said KMPDU Secretary General Ouma Oluga.

The leaders have now demanded that the Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed moves swiftly to avert a crisis following the strike.
