University dons to down tools

Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU) have issued a 21-day strike notice.

The academic staff unions on Friday, December 23 threatened to down tools on January 11, 2017, if the government does not implement the 2013-2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

UASU national chairman, Muga K’Olale, and KUSU Secretary General, Dr Charles Mukhwaya, claimed that the university staff are underpaid and overworked, and they could no longer bear the brunt unless the government implements their 2013-2017 CBA.

The unions are demanding a salary increment claiming an assistant professor should be earning a minimum of Ksh 350,000 and a maximum of Ksh 1.5 million.

“The government has been evading us for the past six years. We can no longer wait,” said Dr Mukhwaya.

They have also registered their support for the doctors’ strike urging them not to relent until their demands are met and have threatened to follow suit, withdrawing their services from the 44 public universities in the country.
