Unmistakably twins? Kakamega girls DNA result out

Sharon Mitekwa and Melon Lutenyo, the Kakamega girls whose case was taken up by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, are biological sisters, a DNA test has revealed.

The report from Lancet Kenya was released on Saturday, almost two months after their bizarre story hit the headlines.

“They share identical DNA profiles, with the 23 allelic loci tested show 100% perfect match, which is consistent with the two being biologically twins,” the report reads.

The families said on Saturday that they are yet to make a decision on what to do next although sources indicate that it is not unlikely that a lawsuit may follow as recourse.

DNA samples from four others: Mevis Imbaya, Rosemary Khaveleli Onyango, Angeline Omina Matias and Wilson Lutah Maruti were used during the test.

Lancet Kenya also confirmed that though Mevis and Melon grew up thinking they are sisters, they are not biologically related.

“Mevis Imbaya exhibits a compatible obligatory maternal and paternal allelic profile with that of Angeline Omina Matias and Wilson Lutah Maruti respectively,” the report adds.

Sharon lives in Nairobi with Angeline Onyango who was originally deemed to be her mother while Melon resides in Kakamega with her biological mum Rosemary Onyango.

The twins were separated at birth in 1999 at Kakamega County Referral Hospital.

Rosemary told Citizen TV that when she gave birth, one of the twins was taken ill and she had to leave her at the hospital. She would come back to breastfeed then go back home.

She questioned whether maybe it was at this point that her baby could have been exchanged.

Melon and Sharon found out about each other on Facebook and were inseparable after that. They asked their parents if they could stay in Nairobi together during the April holiday.

The DCI is expected to give the way forward as per investigations into what could have transpired at the Kakamega County Referral Hospital 20 years ago.
