Unsupportive Migori County govt blamed for low investment

The frosty relationship between the County Government of Migori and the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) has cost the county serious investors interested in setting up businesses, KNCCI chairman for Migori County Samuel Rumo has revealed.

Mr Rumo said that numerous investors have approached the chambers with the intention of investing in the county but are unsure of getting the county government’s support.

The chairman regretted that the county government has turned away potential investors willing to develop the largely artisanal mining industry.

He said they have had several fruitful meeting with investors, which has benefited many counties including Busia, Bomet, Bungoma among others because of the good working relationship between the chamber of commerce and the county governments.

Rumo said that Migori County has made dismal progress on matters of trade, adding that there is no thriving industry in the county four years after its inception, something he said should be a concern to the people of Migori.

He said a majority of investment has been directed to rental housing, neglecting other important sectors of economy that would create more employment and produce food for the people.

Rumo urged the county government to make good use of its proximity to Tanzania to boost trade along the border, saying there is a lot of business opportunities that are untapped.

Migori County officials were unavailable to respond to the issues raised by the county Chamber of Commerce chairman.
