The University of Nairobi Council has sent Prof. Peter Mbithi on leave to pave way for the appointment of a new Vice Chancellor following the end of his term.

The council, in a letter dated June 27, 2019, said it had referred Prof. Mbithi’s interest in reappointment for a second term to the Public Service Commission (PSC) in accordance with the University Act 2012.

The embattled Vice Chancellor is now set to proceed on leave starting July 6, 2019, during which period Prof. Isaac Mbeche was appointed to discharge duties of the office in an acting capacity.

“…the transient arrangement will subsist until a substantive (re)appointment of the Vice Chancellor is made as provided for by the law,” read the letter signed by Prof. Julia Ojiambo, the council Chairperson.

“The Council wishes to take this opportunity to reassure the University of Nairobi community and all Stakeholders that it is in charge and there is no cause for alarm.”
