UoN students go on rampage, destroy voter registration material

University of Nairobi students on Saturday went on rampage over a school directive stopping them from cooking in the hostels.

The students, who are said to have been irked by the directive, stormed the venue where a voter registration exercise, organised by IEBC and the United States Embassy was to be held on Sunday and burnt the tents and speakers and made away with some of the equipment.

The venue had also been set up for a concert that was to be held alongside the voter registration exercise.

According to the schools Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof Isaack Mbeche, investigations are already underway to identify those behind the vandalism.

Speaking to the press on Sunday, Mbeche said that already 11 students have been identified for contravening school regulations regarding cooking in the hostels, noting that those culpable of contravening the directive will be suspended.

“The University has slashed food prices by 25 per cent and improved on quantity and quality to discourage illegal cooking in halls. This directive will remain in place because we do not want to endanger the lives of the students,” he said.

He said that Kenya Power has also raised issue with cooking in hostels terming it as the main cause of blackouts.
